2005/09/09
China Cultural Center in Den Hang

On the evening of 4th September, China Cultural Center in The Hague, together with the Dutch Dance Company Groundbreakers and Dutch Chinese Youth Federation, successfully presented "WE'LL MEET AGAIN", a modern dance piece on the theme of the epidemic created by Mr. Xu Cunsong, a Chinese dancer living in The Netherlands, to the audience in The Netherlands and the whole Internet via the Zoom and Facebook of China Cultural Center in The Hague. This is Mr. Xu's first piece of works after the epidemic, which aims to capture the emotions of ordinary people, reflecting on the impact the epidemic has had on our daily lives, and how people have encouraged and helped each other in their fight to overcome the epidemic and embrace each other again.

An interview with Mr. Xu was conducted by China Cultural Center in The Hague before the performance at the Koorenhuis Theatre in The Hague. "This work blends the emotions of people throughout the epidemic, which started with fears, people were concerned about their families, and our lives and work were affected in many ways, this work allows people to recollect the feeling of loneliness, anxiety and fear at that time." But more importantly, it's an appeal to the warmth and connection between people, says Mr.Xu, "I don't want to make it a horror movie-like piece, but rather to give something that awakens the warmth of people, who would need to care for themselves, but also care for others."”

As a Chinese dancer based in the Netherlands, Chinese aspects appear in almost every work by Mr. Xu Cunsong. "Being Chinese, every work of mine incorporates some Chinese elements, which is the very essence of my work." Mr. Xu Cunsong's creations incorporate both cutting-edge Dutch modern dance concepts and are nourished by Chinese cultural heritage: "Other audiences and artists will also want to see what Chinese choreographers have to offer. On the other hand, as I age and experience, the Chinese elements will be increasingly strong, because where I come from and where I was born cannot be easily assimilated." The musical production of "We'll Meet Again" makes creative use of a combination of erhu and cello, and at the end of the piece, there is light of hope as people withstand the epidemic, and as the performers dance and sway gently, the track "Jasmine Flower", a folksong originally from Jiangsu province, familiar to all Chinese audiences, is played. It shows his nostalgia and respect to his hometown by Mr. Xu Cunsong.
