Ceramic painting, an art form in its own right, uses “ceramic as the canvas and glaze colors as the ink". It complements the art of ceramic shaping. By blending patterns, colors, and occasionally text with the ceramic form, the painting imparts ceramics with rich and expansive cultural significance.
This exhibition features 16 meticulously chosen contemporary porcelain artworks from Jingdezhen. Utilizing techniques such as overglaze and underglaze colors, these artists skillfully integrate elements from traditional Chinese ink painting, calligraphy, poetry, and seal art into the delicate texture of ceramics. These works convey the aesthetic pursuits of Chinese literati painting, offering a glimpse into the contemporary development and preservation of “literati painting on ceramics".
These artworks were crafted to mark the 50th anniversary of Sino-Dutch diplomatic relations. The artists behind them include both "academic" porcelain painters with profound artistic theory and backgrounds, and inheritors of China's intangible cultural heritage with a century-old tradition of hands-on knowledge.
