Since its official launch on February 2, the 2026 “Happy Chinese New Year” themed painted tram, jointly introduced by the China Cultural Center in The Hague and the Municipality of The Hague, has quickly become a moving showcase of Chinese culture across the city. With enthusiastic promotion from the Center’s followers, the tram has turned into a striking urban landmark, attracting many residents to stop, admire, and take photos. To further deepen cultural interaction, on the afternoon of February 13 the China Cultural Center in The Hague organized a special tram ride experience. Mr. Tom Lops, a senior tour leader specializing in travel to China, together with Center volunteer Ms. Jin Yan, led nearly 20 Chinese culture enthusiasts and members of a photography association aboard tram No. 3101 for an immersive Chinese New Year journey.
That afternoon, the group departed from the city center of The Hague and traveled along Line 1 toward Scheveningen Beach. Inside the tram, participants enthusiastically shared their understanding of Chinese customs and traditions, memorable travel experiences in China, and their personal impressions of the Center’s cultural activities. Outside the windows lay the winter streetscape of the Netherlands; inside the carriage, a warm festive Chinese New Year atmosphere prevailed.
Upon arrival at the Scheveningen Beach terminus, Mr. Lops used the transfer interval to explain the creative concept behind the tram’s painted design. From the zodiac Horse motif symbolizing good fortune and harmony, to the “Hello! China” logo, and the charming panda elements, every detail conveys best wishes for the Chinese New Year. Particularly eye-catching are the eight photographic works displayed on both sides of the tram, all taken by Mr. Lops during his multiple visits to China last year. Majestic natural scenery, rich cultural traditions, the vitality of modern cities, and the tranquility of rural life are vividly captured in these images, drawing the attention of passersby as they listened to his commentary.
To help participants fully immerse themselves in the festive spirit, the China Cultural Center in The Hague held a brief ceremony. Director Wang Zheng presented each participant with a bright red New Year scarf symbolizing warmth and good fortune. He extended sincere New Year greetings and introduced the Center’s 2026 cultural program, inviting Dutch friends to one day experience China firsthand by riding Chinese high-speed trains and discovering a real, dynamic, and developing China. The Center also presented the tram driver, Dennis, with a Year of the Horse mascot. After learning about Chinese New Year traditions, he said excitedly: “This is my first Chinese New Year. I wish all Chinese friends a happy New Year!”
Filled with New Year blessings, the painted tram No. 3103 will continue operating on Line 1 until March 2. Daily schedules can be checked on the “Live Openbaar Vervoer” website. Residents and visitors are warmly invited to ride the tram and take photos, experiencing the harmony and joy of the Chinese New Year in this moving festive space.
