Traditional Chinese Opera Workshop & Dialogue with the Producers and Actors

Chinese Opera has been acknowledged as one of the greatest ancient dramas in the world. It is a traditional form of stage entertainment, weaving together elements of mime, dance, song, dialogue, swordplay, and acrobatics into one fluid continuous flow. Gestures, movements, and expressions incorporated within each performer’s script come together to bring forth an impressive performance. Although sharing a common ancestry, Chinese opera boasts over 300 various distinct forms. These forms are generally distinguished by their use of local dialogues and distinct melodies. 



Huai opera is one of the categories of Chinese Opera, which was originated from Jiangsu Province and later developed in some areas of Shanghai and Anhui. The modern opera《The Small Town》that has been won the “Wenhua Grand Award”, was performed by national first-class actors. It is viewed as one of the representatives of modern Huai opera. Recently, they have been performed in Europe. On April 25th, the producers and actors will visit China Cultural Center to share the process of creation and play one part of the opera. 

Many impressive opera Characters were shaped by Huai Opera, such as, “Xu Xian”, “Madam White Snake”, “Xiaoqing” of the “Legend of White Snake”; and “Madam Chiu” of “The Lady with the Lute”. During the workshop, the performance team of 《The Small Town》will play the Huai opera the “Legend of White Snake”. And those opera characters normally only show on the stage will demonstrate Chinese opera makeup and dressing process to provide the audience with a journey to pass through modern society to the traditional world.
