Kunqu (also called Kunqu opera) is one of the oldest surviving types of opera in China. With a history of over 600 years, it is referred to as “the mother of traditional Chinese operas.” In 2001, Kunqu was listed as a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. The Peony Pavilion is a masterpiece of Kunqu written by the playwright Tang Xianzu, which tells the romantic story between the young lady Du Liniang and the scholar Liu Mengmei. Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre will perform The Peony Pavilion (Youth Edition) and a trial show together with the Dutch dance company Groundbreakers, playing one of its most classic scenes—A Surprising Dream. Suzhou Kun Opera Theatre has previously performed this opera in the US, UK, Italy, Greece, Japan, to name a few, and received great reviews.
