2019 Spring Fantasy: Joint Exhibition of the Wu School and Dutch artists

2005/04/17
China Cultural Center in Den Hang

Spring is a season of blooming; everything rouses up from sleeping. “Lante Fantasie” is a yearly art exchange program of China Cultural Center since last year. This year we invite the artists of the Wu school and some Dutch artists who are learning Chinese paintings to do a joint exhibition on Chinese paintings and calligraphies.

The Wu school of painting refers to a group of Chinese painters of the Ming dynasty active in the second half of the 15th and first half of the 16th centuries. It was named after Wu county in the region of Suzhou (苏州), in Jiangsu province, where the painters lived. Among the artists included in the group are Shen Zhou (沈周), Wen Zhengming (文徵明), Tang bohu (唐伯虎), and Qiu Ying (仇英). Generally, their paintings are quite subtle, but that subtlety veils great variety and imagination. Wu school works are characterized by a sure, light brushstroke used to define painterly and structural complexity. The painting style is normally recognized as literati painting (文人画), which is not to depict nature realistically, but to express themselves, to “satisfy the heart”.

This exhibition looks into the nature and landscapes of the paintings of Wu School, and displays 21 artworks of the modern artists of the Wu school, and 16 artworks of the Dutch artists including paintings and calligraphies.

Exhibition: April 19th- June 6th, 2019
Opening: April 19th, 14:30-16:00
Address: China Cultural Center in The Hague, Spui 186, 2511BW, Den Haag.
